I and husband Paul are old-time ravers in a limited sense - we've been high energy dancing for years, but only at raves (in Arizona) for the past year. However, we're both in our 60s - he'll be turning 70 next February - and we both have no intention of stopping. We find the parties/events/raves much more friendly than most of the clubs, including those we danced at regularly for several years in Toronto till we moved our Canadian residence to south of Algonquin Provincial Park (Paul's legally a Canadian and I'm technically a USer - mixed marriage per government view).

Problem with being in rural Ontario for the warm months is the absolute lack of any dancing events - at least that I've been able to discover so far less than 3 hours travel. With the Canadian federal and Ontario provincial governments having done their best to prevent any raves from taking place, there don't appear to be many at all. The only thing I find is a massive 3 day WEMF somewhere in Ontario (no venue given yet for 7/20-22 event). An article written last December at exclaim.ca (www.exclaim.ca/articles/m...clesub.aspx ) suggests that there are smaller events/parties being held underground. Personally we're not insistent on the enormous multi-stage events that draw thousands and cost $25 and more per person. We just want good trance/techno/energy house for dancing - talented local DJs are fine with us.

Since members here have "been around" awhile and likely have connections lots of places, I figured this is a good place to ask for information. So if anyone can steer me to a group/tribe that includes parties/events/raves in the southern Ontario area I'd sure appreciate it. And I and Paul look forward to our return to central Arizona in late October for some great dance events.

Thanks in advance.

  • You and your husband sound absolutely wonderful. I hope I'm still dancing when I get into my sixties and beyond. Don't stop dancing!

I can't be of much help to you on your local area. I do STRONGLY suggest that you guys check out a psytrance event or festival sometime if you have not already. I think you would love the psytrance scene, the music, the people, the art. The people are some of the most intelligent, warm-hearted, loving and accepting people that I have been lucky to know. The psyscene, by intention, is one of the most multi-generational scenes of any of the electronica genres. There are people from 18 all the way up to 60's/70's. I think every generation benefits by that. Psy is also a very international scene.

I love turning on old... and old skool ravers onto the psyscene, especially ravers who left the scene years ago. After going to their first psy party they get their party mojo back and get all jazzed about the psyscene. Old skool ravers that I've brought to a psy event have all commented on the kindness, intelligence and craziness of the people.

The second link below is a map on the chilluminati.org website listing all psy events/resources across the world. Unfortunately, there isn't much listed in Ontario other than a few things down by Toronto. So you would have to travel to get to an event if you are that rural. A lot of people travel for psy events though. Some people travel across the world following the psy parties.

    Happy dancing!

    Paul

    • Thanks, Paul, for the info - and sorry to be so long in responding. So far I've not found any psytrance events taking place out in our neck of the Ontario woods but I'll do a periodic web look in between our online and cottage tasks. We had to make a short return to AZ for some unfinished business and greatly enjoyed the bimonthly Aura in Tempe; not enough time available to do any other event.

As for being able to energetically dance when still in your 60s, I suggest that you check out our website MoreLife.org for lots of science-based information. You don't have to just hope....

  • Hi Kitty,

I recognize you from some of the recent OMW parties, but I don't think we've ever formally met. My wife and I use to live in Cleveland and drove to Toronto often for parties. Unfortunately there isn't much of a psytrance scene up there. Happy hardcore is big there. There's a good message forum about it at hulla.info. We've attended a few of the WEMF's in the past and they really seemed to have gone down hill. I wouldn't highly recommend it. www.lolli.org is another message forum that isn't specific to Toronto, but seems to be pretty popular with the party goers there. You might find some useful info there. Good luck!
    • Hi BJ. Sorry to be so long in replying to your message - the past 7 weeks since posting that message for some event/party info have been extremely busy. There was even a 2 wk drive to and from AZ to finish up a complicated group purchase.... Were you at Aura on 7/14? I'm not sure I know what you look like so I don't know if I saw you there. I do see that we have 3 tribe friends in common, Nyugen being one and we two chatted awhile that night; and a quick few words & hug w/ SunRa before she left early. I also see that you are "Always looking to make a strong positive difference in the world. I cherish originality and reject the ordinary." Along that line, check out Paul's and my writings at SelfSIP.org

I did look at the forum you linked to but didn't see anything for even Toronto.... maybe another time. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll be doing periodic checks online but if nothing shows up, we'll just be glad that there are some really good events in the GPA and look forward to them on our return later in the year.

      • kitty, another way to find out about parties (psy-trance or otherwise) is to go to club-nites or bars in Toronto (for example) and pick up fliers. try to target club nites and bars that simulate the kind of music and "scene" you are looking for. don't go looking for party fliers on "goth nite" rather go when they are having a "trance night" or a house music night. often dj's who throw parties advertise their events at established venues (clubs, bars) and record shops. so record shops where dj's hang out is also a good place to find out about events (and then you don't have to bother with the club crowd, cover charges and drunk people). i don't know where you guys live, but if you are somewhat near Toronto i would say that would be the place to start. hope you find what you're looking for! cheers.
        • Kitty,
I think that it absolutely ROCKS that you and your husband still rave. I wish I could be of some help for you in Toronto. But I can't. I only have ties with the west end of Canada. I do have the info on some good psytrance parties in AZ and if you're ever in Vegas, feel free to hit me up.

          • Hi Nmaste (? name),

Raving/dancing into one's 60s is not something you have to just hope for - you can check out what I and Paul do to keep healthy in body and mind at morelife.org/personal/ Paul turns 70 next February (I'm 63 in April) and has no intention of stopping (me neither :). He keeps current on the newest life-extension studies and our daily regimen reflects his decisions based on our (at least) yearly set of blood tests. Our activities are not just mental - much Internet work - but also physically refubishing of the cottage and property. He removed a major interior wall last year and installed a new beam (I helped and took photos - see our website), giving the cottage a really new look. (He built this cedar tongue and grooved double-wall log cabin himself 40 years ago.) Our 20 year old dock (built by his former son-in-law) is getting our attention right now (much needed from lack of sufficient maintenance), with us doing all the work. Both physical and mental challenges on a regular basis, highly nutritious diet along with judicious supplements, restful sleep and rewarding relationships are in our opinion vital to staying vigorously healthy.

We've got lots of input for AZ trance events - Overmindworks is one of our favorite producers - and I post at EDMNEX.us too, getting a regular list of events when we're there. But if you've got some additional sources of info, please do pass them along. Don't know if we'll get to Vegas, but if you're in Phx area, do check out the events there during the cooler months and say hi if you see us. We're kind of hard to miss ;>)

            **Kitty
            • Thanks Kitty,

I float about on EDMNEX.US as well and the Overmind Guys are great!!! As for the Vegas scene, it's still a bit in the underground phases. Most psytrance parties out here are done by Burners here in Vegas with a few random parties here and there. The best way to find out is to keep posted personally. IF you're on MySpace, you can add me: www.myspace.com/twistedduo or just check here on Tribe.

              Namaste-

        • Hi Virg,

Thanks for the several suggestions. I and Paul used to live in Toronto (the Annex) - he had lived there for *many* years in various locations before we met in January 2000 and I joined him in August of that year. Until May 2005 when Paul changed his legal Canadian residence to the cottage he built 40 years ago in Harcourt Park (too expenseive to keep up 3 residences), we were regulars at several dance clubs. Fluid Lounge was a regular Wednesday night stop and we were considered "members", never waiting or having to pay cover. Menage had good Eurodance on that same night and we'd go there first, also never having to wait in line (but it was just too small). We really loved the Joker for the first 3 years until it became mostly hip/hop - the Cathedral room on top floor was terrific in those earlier years. The Tonic was good on certain nights for most of that time too. The CourtHouse Lounge had terrific Saturday nights for a long time and for a few months there was a house/trance gay event on Sundays that was really good for dancing. The Guv has a great main floor on Friday and Saturday nights (Mark OLiver is really good on Sat), and we'd start in the Drink upstairs (mostly vocal trance), getting in free from AdMan, who liked our dancing at Fluid on Wednesdays. There were also a number of other clubs that came and went but were fun while they lasted, and some newer ones we only tried once or twice - - I don't even remember the names of most of them, though Paul probably does the older ones since he went to them for several years before I joined him. (He was a regular way back at RPM, and allowed to dance on the stage- it later became the now hugely popular multi-room Guvernment.) It didn't matter to us whether the clubs were in the main downtown club district or on College St or Queen; we just wanted good energetic dancing and some room to do it in. We'd typically dance 2 hours non-stop and then leave, or if it was really good, take a short break and go for another hour. Some nights we'd go to 2 places for about 90 minutes each.

We always looked at the fliers that were being passed out - most wind up on the streets in Toronto, unfortunately. Ocassionally we'd follow up, use the guest list and check out some place new. The dance scene in Toronto is very good, even if much of it became hip/hop in major clubs by the time we left. We definitely miss that feature of the city, and if we can ever afford to have a residence in Toronto again - in addition to the cottage and my legal residence in Arizona - it would be great.

For now I'd sure like to find that there are budding trance DJs out in the Kawartha's (still over an hour south of us, but more than half the distance to Toronto) or maybe even Haliburton or Bancroft (both "next door") who would like to play for energetic dancers. It would keep our summers here at the cottage from being dance music deprived. (Since we're on a dial-up we can't even stream audio.)

Dancing is fun and great exercise. That's why we really like the more energetic genres - eurodance is Paul's favorite, but he can do a lot with the more energy filled trance pieces. Me- I'll dance to most anything with a good beat and some melody ;>)
