Mine was an underground disco in Germany circa '91...I didn't know it was a 'rave' until I went to my official first one in Oakland('93), which was busted by the cops about an hour after I got there...the party was suppossed to restart somewhere near the water...all the kids showed up in the parking lot, with music blasting from their stereos...neither the sound nor the DJ's showed up, but we all danced until the sun came up over the water...it was beautiful...everyone danced and talked and socialized...talke about PLUR!!!

I don't know the name of the first party I went to, because the first few times I went to parties I wasn't aware they had names. :) Anyways, it was in early 1992, at a no-longer-existing warehouse near the bottom of the Granville Street Bridge, on the downtown side. I was tripped out by the huge blue monster mouth they had set up for you to walk through to get into the party. :)

I went to a small one in an empty Lower Haight retail space
              Christmas Eve 1990...

A toontown or two in '91, trying to see what the buzz was all about, left early...

But I often think of my first one as

a Gathering in the Spring of '92 in a big abandoned warehouse, probably somewhere around China Basin...there was a map point. the map point took you to a parking lot where you boarded the box of a rented moving van that took you to the warehouse...so we couldn't even see where you were going

              That's when I GOT IT.

              (I'm a bit slow)

i think that's the one that impressed me the most, too--my first map point/u-haul truck paty, the same one but we were in different truck trips (i believe). i was with bruce, some of whose relatives had fled nazi germany (and some who had not) and we shared black humor schtick about that in the bumpy, crowded and completely dark ride with its unknown destination....

the first parties i went to that played acid house were called the Ben Wa ball... OC/LA, 1989?

there were all sorts in LA around 1990... Double Hit Mickey, Marcia Brady's Bedroom, Flammable Liquid, Sunday Love, Tef/Davin parties in LA.

The first mindblowingly good party I went to was a Toon Town party in LA, 11/91.

            some of the best:
            toon town, 650 howard, 1991.
the gatherings and sharons at the concourse in sf.
            toon town new years 1992
come-unity parties that went till dawn at 1015 folsom
wicked in the basement of 1015
            carefree/8.0
            all the gathering/vision/basics parties.
            sunsets at point malate
            bulletproof boat parties

but the wicked full moons at bonnie doon were the high points of my life so far...

            ah. now i'm geriatric.

I was so down with Come-Unity at 1015...I tried to tell a young hipster recently that I used to go to 1015, and they teased me...she had no idea that 1015 used to be THE PLACE back in the day...I still have some old $5 off flyers, printed on color stock paper...I knew the door guy, so I never paid, but 1015 was RAD...Tracey's sunrise sets were dope!

Um I think we already had this topic but whatever... my first one was in Sept of 1990, it was just some random where house party in downtown LA, can't remember the name.

I used to love Flammable Liquid, Sunday Love, Truth... those were the good days. I remember toon town too!

It sort of depends on definition. In 94 I accidentally ended up at a party in P-town (cape cod) Had no idea what is was really was. There was just a bunch of people all lovey on each other and comdoms were handed out at the door. I just thought it was a gay party with strange electronic music. My friedn went in and scored some mushrooms.

But growing up south of Boston my friends and I had very little idea what techno was aside from La Busche and Technotronic, It wasn't until I got the hell out of there that I was really introduced to some Trance while living in Boston (Back Bay) with a friend from Holland. Then from there I could never find much until I moved to Colorado in 98. And wow what a different world. Went to a warehouse party and that started phase VIII of my life. It's all been a wild road form there.

                  '93 in Minneapolis

There was hentai on the brick and a huge black man naked on stage spinning orgasmic techno...

Aint nothin like the midwest break ins!

I remember an article on the first page of the Metro section of our paper. This warehouse owner was interviewed about the inexplicable events taking place in the warehouse and industrial districts. He was baffled by a spike in power use from 10pm sat to 6am sun heh! And all the stuff had been moved but nothing stolen! What amazed me is that they could have a wall of sound 8 X 30' there and gone without a trace... like there should have been burn marks :)

At one party the cops showed up, looked around, seemed freaked out, and left! There was a 7 1/2' tall black drag queen in full afro wearing a star spangled hot pant/bra combo, japaneese business men in suits, punks, kids in fast food uniforms (as a point of fasion), goths, bangers, ballers, and just about every other sub culture genre there! Everyone had their own style, their own dance, and their own identity. We meshed and came together through 'house music. When trance was the hardest teckno you'd heard, and Rotterdam would bend your mind "Back the fuck up, cause Romeo's here!"

About a year after that you had to pay big bucks to get a warehouse. Soon after that we moved above ground... like '95. And y'all know what happened to Chicago...

                    MIDWEST!
my first was Zygomatic 2 in 90 or 91 in milwaukee,
which led to a steady vocation and ended in two days of jailtime and the death of the scene for a good 6 months in the midwest norths.
i remember when we all danced in little circles buggin out, instead of ranks and rows facing the dj...
those where good times except for the warehouse grime you'd find in your nose that morning coming down from a good fry!
i agree w/ bridget, it was punks, freaks, burnouts, latino gang bangers(who'd been dancing to house and techno for YEARS.), gays, strays, and what slowly became "ravers".
also if you where too young for bars it was your club for the night.

some event @ the Trocadero... i don't even know the name, but it was also the first time i did (can i say this on here) E...

    it was for my birthday.

there was a chill room upstairs

    i was in heaven.

this was probably in '93 or '94

Funny aside about the Trocadero around the same time...my freinds and I went to a party there, had a fab time, and decided to go again. we had been missinformed, told it was a weekly...when we went back the next week, E'd out, and me in my ponytails and fuzzy sweater, we were shocked to walk into bondage-a-go-go...quite a differant experience on E, lemme tell you! and boy, did my friends and I stick out...but we still just went with the flow and had a good time...

I remember just walking around in awe...I had never been to anything like that before...I was in the bathroom, trying really hard not to stare at the really big she-male applying lipstick in the bathroom, and some girl wearing a t-shirt that said "Pussy" across the boobs grabbed my ass while in line for the stalls...I knew that random hugging probably meant something entirely differant to this crowd...
      • Re: What and When was your first "Rave"?

        Tue, May 25, 2004 - 10:30 PM
my very first rave was early 94, i believe, a party on shotwell or capp street where drc was spinning -- but i didn't know it was a rave, thought it was just a party with too many damned people and not enough ventilation.

a few weeks later, someone told me that if i liked the music at wicked and comeunity, i should check out two parties that saturday. one was a friends and family at klub komotion, where i went, paid my two bucks or whatever, and felt like there was no room to dance and people weren't very friendly (ironic in retrospect) -- so i went to party suggestion #2, which was at the trocadero.

i danced my ass off all night long, and on leaving, met this weird guy on the street with his hair hacked off funny and odd handmade clothes with shorts layered over long pants... he introduced himself and turns out he owned ameba on haight, the old-school tiny raver central store, alan ameba (one of the coolest guys on the planet). he later told me that party at trocadero was the first stompy.

leslie, i love your recounting of those parties that we (and i bet others here) attended but you got your guys mixed up: mark was the ameba owner (and former boyfriend of a woman who's become a great dj) who eventually moved to santa rosa and kept his hand in rave things; it was alan who was dressed like you describe him and worked there; he moved here to santa cruz and moved on in other ways. both great classic guys! and how can we forget the equally 'family' hangout store hosewares down the street and the folks there! now, both history, but beautiful history, as are those great afternoon bar-b-cue parties in the big lot behind ameba lined with san pedros!
          • Re: What and When was your first "Rave"?

            Thu, May 27, 2004 - 11:35 PM
thanks, will, but i don't have anybody mixed up. it's believe that mark and alan were partners, and alan was there after mark left (and opened a tiny record store in santa rosa), but after the big amoeba records opened on haight in the old bowling alley, alan closed his store and moved back to santa cruz.

it was alan who i met on the street that night, wearing his custom clothing line that they sold in the store... and who used to be the phone info line for the rave scene, he actually would read what' going on off on from a printout from the sfraves calendar that he kept on the counter. it was alan who suggested i sub to that list... and my life was never the same.

i never got to know mark very well, though we spotted him on the dancefloor a couple of weeks ago at the late night sneaky and meat katie show at mezzanine.

and i have to say that mark's ex-girlfriend was a great dj then, too. nice to see djs really hang in there for so many years and still stay fresh.

oops, i meant "i belive that mark and alan were partners" -- too much editing, not enough proofreading ;^)

btw, forgot to mention that mark ameba's hat was one of the most consistent symbols of the scene to me during those years... that cool heavy wool felt thing looked like a birds nest, so distinctive. as a hat person, i did admire that about him.

            the bbqs! that's so rad...

ameba was so awesome... they were the ultimate ground zero for the small rave scene back in the day. remember all the mix tapes under the counter? before cds...

i remember seeing the first 2 mix cds there (jeno and spun)... i thought, "naaaaah, these will never replace the underground mixtape!"

i would always buy one tape and load up on flyers when i went in. oh yeah, they also carried anarchic adjustment clothing...

it was such a close and dynamic community then. everyone was so accessible.

housewares was really cool too but it lacked something that ameba had. i loved all those flyers on the wall.

i have a gigantic box in my garage with all my flyers.

i think it was 91 at the casa in downtown LA. scince then my life has never been the same. after that night i was hooked. i needed to hear that music that moved me so. see those incredible happy people and take those deliciouse mind altering substances.

from there i started hitting flamable liquid, all family and fresh produce parties. insomniac, citrisonic, no doz, does your mama know, and for those who know and where there, the infamouse partys countdown and communication. those two nights will always live in infamy as far as i'm concerned.

Not my first, but my best...

I loved the YOUR SISTER'S HOUSE parties in San Francisco. They were small, and held at a different place every week, in 1993 and perhaps continued into 94. All the djs were women; the parties were thrown by a collective of female djs, of the same name as the party. Sometimes SISTER'S preceded their parties with educational events, discussions, etc.

Around the same time TAZ (now SPAZ) was throwing great (also relatively small) parties at their space on the 6th floor of an old office building on Market Street. YOUR SISTER'S HOUSE used that location for some of their parties, and on at least a few occasions, TAZ and SISTER's doubled-up, when a SISTER'S party over the course of the evening transformed into a TAZ party.

At that time the TAZ and YOUR SISTER'S HOUSE parties were just a few hundred people at most (never over, say 250?). There was plenty of room on the dance floor.

The vibe at these events, in the Summer and Fall of 1993, was amazing indeed.

My oh my...how things have come along.

I remember my first party in '91, at an after hours place in Boston, called The Loft. Right behind Boston City Police Headquarters. Nuts. Armand Van Helden (used to be just Armand) was playing house downstairs, but he was just an opener at that point, and people would clown him for his yellow fur Kangol, yellow Puma suit, fake shelltoes, ski-goggles, and the FAKEST link you've ever seen; just rediculous, and taking himself WAYYY too seriously, but it was all fun and innocent then. Many's the twisted night spent there, and hooking up with the flyers for the big parties.

Well...SPAZ is still doin it. I didn't catch onto their stuff until '96, but it's still goin on.

Circa '90/91. Mr. Floppy's Fractal Funhouse at the Cocoanut Grove in Santa Cruz. The setup was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. I went to the back room and starting talking to these two guys who were still waiting for the sound system to be set up, they turned to be Spun and Harry Who. Spun gave me a round, purple flyer (which I still have) that said "RAVE" on it. Later that night I watched spun rock the room solid. Went to that party on the flyer the next week and was HOOKED from that moment on.

wow! you were at that mr. floppy's also! while our paths must have crossed many times--as we have several friends in common here as well as harry who and spun whom you mention--this just shows how a small town like santa cruz and even smaller scene like raves are still on the outer edges of 'six degrees of separation'! btw, was anyone else here there besides us?
      • Re: What and When was your first "Rave"?

        Sat, March 5, 2005 - 10:34 AM
There was a warehouse on Russ Street in SF that was the base for most of the "Mr. Floppy's" parties. Those parties were monumental in thier depravity and ability to push anyone within a few mile radius to their limits. The Coconut Grove Party in Santa Cruz was nothing short of brilliant. The Coconut Grove had no idea what they were in for, when they agreed to allow the party to happen there. Yes, the good ol' days when most people, including the police had no idea what a rave was. To this day the elusive Mr. Floppy has never been identified. There have been some that try to take the credit, but to those who were deeply swept up in the wave, there was only one king of kaos. (We love you P*##$...........I heard he's off in Iceland somewhere.........
So to answer your question, That was a good party.

First time was in 1992 in some warehouse in San Diego near the docks. Can't remember the name of it. But I do remember dancing for 7 and 1/2 hours non-stop, and finding out some guy fell through the upper level floor with a nitrous tank.

first was in Calgary at a place called the Republik in 1991...and once you got past paying at the door another guy handed out LSD, heh

a favourite was in Vancouver 1993, in this warehouse in Gastown, and what was cool was the freight elevator up to the party was a party into it's own, all decorated, couches, disco ball and DJ!

My first "proper" rave would have been Energy 1990 in Colchester, Essex, UK ... unfortunately me and my friends had scored some amazing purple ohms and spent the majority of the evening at the hatfield peveral train station ... we did however see a huge convoy of raver cars from atop a bridge of the A12 coming in from the London map point as we were coming up

The first big massive rave I attended was World Party (again in Essex) featuring Carl Cox, DJ Rap, Fierce Ruling Diva, Altern 8, Fabio and Grooverider, Jumping Jack Frost and a slew of other cool heads performing

Aside from that, I saw Prodigy play live for the first time ANYWHERE at the Colchester hippodrome ... they mashed down Charlie ... brilliant night) heh used to see Keith rocking out at the barn in brainteree ... nutty geeza ... bones plyed there along with Mr. C and the Shamen ... other notable weekiles were Tootoo's in Colchester (Jamie Smart our local hero was one of the residents there before he went off to tour with Prodge for 6 years or so .. also discovered Empirion with one of my best mates) and Berwick Manor just outside of romford where DJ Hype held court

      Yeah, I had it good!

Dune 93? i believe. Not quite certain about the year. Although I had been to some warehouse Party earlier the same year, I can't remeber the name of the party... Jesse Brooks was spinning and "cateyes" were the candy of choice... that's all I remember from that party :)oh yeah and there was a boxing ring in the middle of the warehouse.

      Happy Valley, May 8th 1993.
It was located on the La Posta Indian Reservation in off Hwy 8 in san Diego.
My friends and I had been hearing of "raves" for a couple of years, and we'd always make fun of them because the flyers were always promising "bust free" locations, and we thought the music was just cheesy dance pop stuff.
Once at the party I was totally terrified and totally excited at the same time.
I had never heard music like that before, there were loops playing on the side of a white van, there was a bouncy castle with tonz of crazy people inside, a guy at a table selling dayglo/ floro toys etc..
I couldn't figure out where the music was coming from, I had no idea that a dj was spinning records.. it took me another 2 parties to figure that out.
There were big piles of cow shit that everyone kept stepping in, it was really windy.....People were dressed all wacky.....
I have no idea who spun that night, but I'll never forget how crazy that music was.
After that party, I was hooked. It seemed like we went to a rave every weekend for years after that. Hell, Im still going to crazy parties 12 years later.

Monkey Do!: Happy Valley, May 8th 1993.
It was located on the La Posta Indian Reservation in off Hwy 8 in san Diego.

OMG, that was my first SoCal Rave!!!!... I'm hearing names like Grape Ape, Playskool, Dune... All great memories...

        But on with my answer...

I've been involved with dance music most of my life... My uncle used to be a dj in LA circa 1985-1990 where he played New Wave, Electro, and some Techno... So, I've been sneaking my way into clubs since I was 15 years old... Hell, although I didn't recognize what it was at the time, I've had the pleasure of visiting the original Warehouse Club in Chicago (a story all in itself, pm me if you're interested)...

But my awareness of being a raver didn't hit until June 22, 1992... I was on deployment with the US Navy in Hong Kong... Some friends and I found a pub called the Kangaroo Pub in Kowloon where some local Brits/Aussie's (not sure only remember the accent) invited us to an "afterhours party"... Since we weren't from around there, we threw back a few drinks with them as they showed us the way..

We walked about three blocks to a warehouse hangar... We were introduced as "American Friends" and was let into the party for free... The music was insane.. Techno and House beats like I've never heard before... There were girls walking around with trays of various pills and vials of what they called, "Liquid X"... While the party favors were free, the cigs and sodas were not... So we felt obligated to buy a pack of ciggys...

From that point on... All I remember was riding the train under the Hong Kong Bay to get back to our hotel... We emptied our pockets to find fliers for "raves" weeks ahead (which we wouldn't be there for) and a few from some local all-night dance clubs (which we did hit up)...

In 96 I went to a 'queer youth rave' at the oddfellos hall. It played electronic music... it had visuals... I think some people were on E. It lasted till 4. I was 14 and I thought it was totally lame. In retrospect, it was a pretty lame party.

Summer of 97 when I was 15, I went to a rave in Melbourne Australia... and although I didn't take any drugs, I danced all night with about 150 other people crammed into a semi-truck loading platform of a warehouse. The street outside was filled with ravers... I was amazed that there were no cops to be found, but I think melbourne must have had a really awesome scene at that time.

When I got back to Seattle I went to some Naf parties and similar stuff. I didn't like it nearly as much. It took me years to find a party that compared to that one in Melbourne.
  • All I can remember of my first rave was that it was in the warehouse area of Compton, which is not far from where I lived, and the map point was about 30 miles away. But the second rave I went to was Technoflight in Long Beach, CA inside the Spruce Goose dome around about April/May of '92. That was a trip! But it wasn't till I plopped the little pill more than three years later at the big NYE'95/96 event inside the Los Angeles Olymipic Auditorium that dare I say "got it." (I was at the infamous Grape Ape rave in Sept. 93 very sober and very, very sick actually..)
    • A hardcore party in LA called Rave-On Drugs, by KY-Lube n Stuff back in 1993--- I was in 8th grade and going to catholic skool at the time and had to sneak out for the night.
I was absolutely amazed-tarped windows, green argon lazers, lifesize dayglow mushrooms, spinning daizies, projections on all the walls, astroturf playgrounds, moonbounces, nitrous tanks, and cartoon kids from mars... but more than anything else, totally sober, it was the vibe that got me... watching kids of every different nationality, and subcultural background, dancing in peace, hugging each other, and having fun gave me this hope in humanity which lives on to this day... I was this little darky industrial kid, and i dacned and skipped around all night long... i had more fun than i had ever had in my whole life...
though we have moved on in certain ways, once you've been touched by that vibe, it will always be with you...

15 yrs. old. my first party was Felix in Sonoma county. I remember while waiting for the shuttle to take us to the party we traded some guy our beedies for two drops of liquid...

...This huge circus tent pitched in the middle of nowhere...layers and layers of synthesized beeps, clicks, sirens, and etheric voices---lasers--strobes shooting out/refracting off the fog...trekking accross my mind, walking towards a close encounter with future memories..

I thought to myself, "This is going to have an huge impact on my life."

OK, since no one is posting anything from the east coast... my first "rave" ...
NASA, new york city, at The Shelter. Scotto, DB, on-e, soul slinger, sometimes scott henry... I don't remember exactly when my first one was. And after the first one I went (snuck out of my friend's parents house every saturday night and returned blowing whoot whoot on my whistle on the train to brooklyn to sneak back in) pretty much every week for about a year.

SO much fun. Sitting on speakers watching the night move by. I remember sitting on a couch with a tall boy with a big sweaty nose and a muppets book. Handing out MAYBE stickers. watching the queens come in late night. Waving around thick neon green plastic straws, Dancing and Dancing and oranges passed around in the morning. and those mornings when you'd leave and there would suddenly be not only quiet city daylight, but also sometimes SNOW, that really was there and had snuck up on us through the night.

"Plastic Passion", Downtown L.A. circa 1986(could of been '87 can't remember that was a lot of brain cells ago) More of an artist loft party but definately had the makings of a modern rave but a lot less people. "Egg Salad". 1987/8 had the people.

Reading thru the posts, I'm amazed how few people have mentioned anything as far back as L8 80s. My first was Crazy Eights (08-08-88) just outside of Toledo, OH. (I think it was Toledo... damn it's been a while.)

wow, it's so great to read these stories. I'm so jealous. My first party was in '99, Electric Daisy Carnival. My friend dosed me with acid, (I had never done any drugs before) and I remember being amazed at how many different people there were, how many different ages and styles, from really young to really really old. I expected it to be all "club kids" (whatever I thought they were). And different as everyone seemed, they were all dancing to the same beat. It was beautiful, and I felt like I had come home to something I hadn't known I was looking for. So see? Even in 99 people were still having great experiences like that, even at a massive, and I'm sure there are kids out there having them now too. At least, I hope.

Rave Hut at Decibles nightclub in Mechanicsburg, PA, 1993. It was a rave weekly that sorta sucked. The music was too fast and crazy. (early harcore) I was too young and i could have died in there.

Los Angeles Technoflight at the Shrine Auditorium (1991)

another really memorable one was Grape Ape. They had a huge puffy throne chair you could take pictures on and a skate ramp. I think 808 state played.

I was trippin like crazy and the line to the bathroom was up against this huge trash dumpster. i stood there forever and all of a sudden i felt ALL WET. i swore to god i peed my pants waiting there, but then i realized I was just trippin. ha! i was totally dry.

i made my own outfit that night by sewing vintage dresses into my jeans and a cute halter top. og raver clothing style.

wow some of these stories are crazy. thanks for sharing :)

wasnt my first one but one i remember the most... "A Girl Called Myra" at the oak street wharehouse in LA was probably in '88 or '89. headliner was Bleu, Doc Martin spun and they had a go-go stage with nekked girls covered in fluro body paint under a wildfire... then there was "Paw-Paw patch" they had a big warehouse with a rollercoaster inside going around the dancefloor the front wall was all cerwin vegas that was the firsr "massive" i went to they also had a ferris wheel... there was another fun one in a parking garage and it was pitch plack but i remember a dj playin mama said knock you out and trash cans full of tecate...another wharehouse where guru josh played and they had a bunch of chinese dragons running around. after that the state police (now the highway patrol) started busting up the parties, the news media was at all the map points and people started smokin crack about that time i got out of it... 'till i moved up here... i started going out again in 2000... and it has been a long strange trip down the rabbit hole ever sence...

Mine was in 91 at the Concourse Center in SF. Not sure of the name. Could have been 'A rave called Sharon'.

There were a lot of firsts for me at that party! It opened my mind to just how friendly and positive I could be. =)

    Sonar Festival 2002 (Barcelona, Spain)

Over 30, 000 people lasting over 3 days day and night...and it was intense...not only to discover I was a raver at the ripe age of 30 yrs , but also because...

-we were robbed of everything valuabewithin one hour of arriving
-we overdosed on some k-ooky substances and were abducted by the red-cross (camp where they inserted a homing devise in my ass) before releasing me alone, back into the abyss of bass.
-I was almost raped surrounded by a crowd of hundreds...though it started out as being hot, fun...I realized that I couldn't make it stop without asking for help...I paniced when no one could hear or understand me...and giant black man would not let me loose of his grip...
-the art installations melted my brain...imagine a breathing "speaker" that filled the halls loud enough to envelope you despite the thumping arena-sized dance floors!

    I will never forget it...

Sacramento. 1992. In Van Gogh's Ear. A warehouse around R and 10th I think. Map point was at some local gear shop, where they gave me a ticket that I still have buried in a photo album. Stepped into a that warehouse with a thousand people and a laser and was never the same.

Th other truly memorable rave was when we took it up a notch a few months later and attended A Rave Called Sharon in SF - the fashion district. Thousands of people boogying their asses like I'd never seen before. I live in LA now, but since that moment, SF has been my passion. Finally, I have to mention The Gathering parties, The Wicked parties, and the Basics parties. Incredible time.

Hmmm, not sure, I do remember going to a Toon Town at 177 Townsend street, it must have been late '91. I remember going to see the Virtual Reality demos (cuz I was a windows systems engineer) I remember walking past people on the dance floor who were "deep in the vibe of House" , fanning themselves with white handkerchiefs and everything, I thaough it was VERY weird, (little did I know that in less than 12 months I would BE one of them).

The first party that I wen't to that I "got it" I think was the Whoopie Ball in Oakland, that must have been '92. The first party that I went completely into trance at was a renegade at a Scandia up on 101 north, marin. We were about to leave and Ernie Munsen showed up and said "stick around, I'm going to go off!" He most definitely did. (and I did as well :)

Did you goto Cyberfest? That had some great VR stuff there. Was cool that it was linked up to that party in LA too. Think it was in downtown SF. I was already way into the music before I really started hitting the parties so I was really excited when I finally made it to one. I'm not sure which was my first but some that I remember the names of where the NYE rave at Knott's Berry Farm, Grape Ape in Irvine, Narnia in San Diego. When I turned 18 I dove headfirst into the so Cal scene and started DJing at parties too. I was so into it I started a phone line for SD and LA parties called the Splendor Line. So many great memories from back then. Much more exciting than the same ol clubs I go to now but I still have fun.

It was in 1994 at Clun Chamelion in Syracuse, New York it was called Jupiter, and was part of a series of Planet Parties in Central New York which was revived with Mars 2 back in Fall of 2002. I never really considered Jupiter my first "real" rave though because it was on the same night the club had rave night every week, and even thought I was massively underaged at the time I still went every week. My first big party was Mars 1 at the War Memorial in Syracuse NY in 1996. BTW dos being 24 y/o qualify me as a geriatric raver, esp since I was partying in the 1st half of the 90's? I sure feel like one, and few people I know in the scene have been around as long as I have.

A group of friends and I were proto-raving in Pittsburgh in 1991, and a few of us moved to SF with flowers in our hair. My first official rave was ToonTown - UFOs are Real in April of '92.

Worked the door with courtney for wicked, early days and was on trash crew with Trish ( one of the founders)at all the full moons, handing out bags begging the kids to pick up their balloons with that irritating gas in it. Hmm its been so long ....those were good times.

I first discovered hardcore techno in a little club outside Nurnburg Germany end of '90 and was hooked. By the time I got back to the states I didn't get to my first real rave until august '94. I went to an Equinox party at an airplane hanger way outside of denver and drop my first tab of dose. I soon discovered Tribe productions (Merrick, Miami, Q, and crew). I worked for them and threw the best parties ever in Denver. Then I moved to SF and the rest is blurry history.

About 11 years ago somewhere outside of L.A. I can't recall the name of the party, which really pisses me off. It was a pretty big event in what would resemble an airplane hanger. I remember dancing really hard for hours and having one of the dancers covered in nothing but silver body paint and a heart over her unmentionables come over to me and hug me for a really long time and then she kissed me on the lips. As I was going to leave one of the promoters invited me to come to his club the next weekend and said he'd put me "on the list". I went. We got together and that kicked off many years of amazing parties and experiences for me. It was a wild ride...I miss it someitmes living away from all that way up in the mountains. People in cities like LA have no idea how lucky they are to have so many great things to do and parties to go to sometimes several in one night.

Gah! I'm tearing up with all sorts of bitchen memories!

I think my first rave was a Toon Town, but I may be wrong. i think TT ws '91? So, no it couldn't have been. I was 20 when I went and I'd have been 22 in '91.

I was kind of lucky enough to be somewhat of a 'mascot' to what I refer to as the Mafia - the guys that threw so many of these parties. I was the guy that stood at map points, handed out what I was supposed to hand out, lugged PA's up and down cliffs, etc. Man, I miss all that stuff and I sure miss a lot of those folks.

If there's not one already there should be an electronica, rave, acid house, hip hop, jungle, whatever, type remake/remix of that song. That'd be hot! I may have been born in 68 but I love all good music from back then too.

Floppies aka "the flophouse", Oakland, California, circa 1990 or 1991?? Floppies was always my favorite, huge puppets reflecting in the black light floating above the dance floor, many rooms with different themes. Back in the day before the floppies days it was a brothel....

oh yeah, and Toon Town and the Wicked Full Moon parties, then I moved to the east coast thinking I could find the same vibes, WAY different... Went to a bunch of the color parties (Blue, Orange, Tangerine or some names like that) and hung out at The Loft Boston and Liquid Sky NYC. I stopped going when I went with a group of Liquid Sky friends to the museum in Jersey and said, "this'd be a great place to have a party" my friends said "yeah" and immediately talked to the managers then and there.... When the party happened, I drove to Jersey from Boston with friends and couldn't get in the door, I was on the list, didn't know which one, tried the wrong one and well didn't have those ninja tactics to ask again and again, they were too busy, and I felt shy (my pitfall). My friends were OMing in a circle and calling me in, they made the party happen I couldn't get in. It was called "The Source" and I was the source to catalyze the event yet I was stuck outside the party with tons of security pushing me along another route of out. I said forget it from then on, it didn't feel in integrity like the early days....

Oh, that really sucks! I'd be hella mad....Oh, well, c'est la vie, huh?

My first party was shut down just minutes after I got there...all the people moved to an industrial area of Oakland, waiting for the dj's, who never showed up...But everyone stayed and pumped music out of their car stereo's and danced and got social...we all watched the sun rise over SF bay...it was beautiful, amazing....Lots of hugs all around...After that, I was hooked...went to a lot of ComeUnity parties, Wicked Crew, Tribal Funk, etc...early nineties...my last big event was around 95...it was sponsered by Pepsi at the San Diego Convention Center and taht just made me sad...A couple summers ago I went to my first party in a midwest cornfield, and it was glorious...The kids out here still know how to throw a great party...best of all...it was a free event....BYOW (bring your own water)...refills at the hose...People came from miles...it was as it should be...

I started a MeetUp in hopes to centralize events all in one place for the southern California area. I’m including a variety of events and social gatherings. Also, if anyone would like to list an event, please feel free to email me here at Tribe or at the MeetUp site.

1993 seattle : Elysium "rave of the gods" or some such cheesiness. total commercial endeavor, i was completely overwhelmed. no dancey 4 me as was self conscious in the extreme. then maybe one year after, back home in colorado springs, a party called Arrival, in a vacant building on the west side. that was my "first"; dancing with complete abandon, a life changing experience. not lip service. it seriously altered my course. was anybody here= there?

I think my first rave was somewhere around 1995 at the Wow Hall in Eugene, Oregon. I was 30 years old at the time and most of the kids there were under 20. I didn't care, I was there for the music and to cut a rug on the trampoline like dance floor. I somehow transitioned from Pink Floyd, Zappa, the Grateful Dead and 1970's Funk that my stepfather turned me onto to as a kid onto the Orb, William Orbit, Spacetime Continuum and LTJ Bukem. I later researched the originators of the genre including Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Derrick L Carter and Carl Craig. From what I understand they started it all and my background in 70's funk helped make sense of it. These guys transitioned 70's disco and funk into the origins into what became the techno movement in the very late 70's and early 80's.

New Wave (mid-80's) was my true bridge to the future and I always felt that Thomas Dolby was the master of electronic gizmo's. Since then, I have attended indoor-outdoor raves/warehouse events and clubs in Seattle;PDX; Vancouver Island, Canada; Whistler; Sydney and Melbourne, Australia; London, England; Edinburgh, Scotland; Koh Phangan, Thailand (Full Moon Party); Humboldt; Mendo; San Francisco, San Diego and other places I just quite can't remember right now ;-) I never got bored with electronica and I still support the local DJ scene here in Humboldt.... 13 years after my first event. I live for the all encompassing vibe.

I first got turned on to what became 'electronica' in 1984 when I bought Kraftwerk's album Computer World. Around the same time I bought Byrne and Eno's My Life of the Bush Ghosts. Those albums put Van Halen's 1984 to utter shame and I was never the same. A year later I heard Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express and Autobahn. My friend turned me onto those two albums in 1985. He had a radio show on WJSC at Johnson Sate College in Vermont. I played my first 'electronic' track around 1993 when I had a radio show on KSUA which was the student run radio station at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. I was an unemployed college graduate who possessed a worthless degree in Geography from UAF with a big CD collection and my friends talked me into starting a radio show. I think that first track was an Orb or Kraftwerk song. That was around the time that a friend who was the station manager at KSUA turned me on to Axiom Ambient and Axion Dub. Bill Laswell was the god of epic music back then...... A lot has change since then, eh?

My first one was Plantasia in San Bernadino on NYE in 94. It was part of the three Millennium parties that CPU threw. I remember it was originally supposed to be at the LA Coliseum, but somehow got moved to the Orange Show. I remember taking a capsule of pure in the parking lot, and waiting in line forever, as we barely made it in about 10 minutes to midnight. We never made it into the main pavilion to see Moby cause we weren't much into him anyways, but I do remember Ernie Munsun's wicked set that night, and spending a lot of time on the giant carnival slide outside. I spent a lot of Saturday nights/Sunday mornings at the Orange Show over the next four years... Other L.A. parties I remember being incredibly good between 94-97:

    Oasia, somewhere in the desert
the first couple of Dune parties in the desert
Armageddon on July the 4th at Sculptureland out in Indio
    Pyrotechnodiskowerks at the Grand Olympic
Futurama at that huge warehouse in downtown-anyone remember this place? it was right behind some train tracks, and there were quite a few parties there at the time. I remember going to a Melodic there one time that got busted early on.
Technology in Malibu hills-didn't Freaky Chakra play this?
Fry For Five at the Racquetball World, until it was shut down
Weeble World at the soundstage on Santa Monica Blvd.
Opium at the mini golf course-don't remember where
one of the early JuJu Beats parties at a ski resort where Trance spun a wicked sunrise set.
Parliament-I remember the warehouse on Highland, and the space in Silverlake the best
    Operation at the Orange Show
Lunatic Labs at the El Capitan basement
Cadence in the El Capitan basement-I think that this might have been the night the last Narnia was cancelled, and the Narnia promoters stole our money?
**a party near Fontana in an old train depot in the middle of nowhere-you had to go to a shopping center, get on a bus that took you to a spot, where they piled everyone into the back of a U-Haul truck, that dropped you off in the desert near the station, and you had to walk a long ways... The entire place was made of tin it seemed like, and you could hear it rattling and see the lasers from miles away. There were two sections set up inside, one was hardcore and the other was trance/progressive. All the bus drivers quit by morning, except for one, and you had to show your car keys to get on the bus, pick up your car, and drive back to pick up your friends. Does anyone remember this and what was it called? One of the best parties I ever went to**
    most of the F.A.M.I.L.Y. events
Every night of TIME at the Park Plaza
All of the Omni Centre parties in the El Capitan basement
A lot of parties at the Pico Indoor Swap Meet, and World On Wheels
and of course Magic Wed's when it was at the Carlos And Charlie's on Sunset

    sigh* those were the days

Hi all, im so glad i found this group. My first rave was in 1991 in Los Angeles. I don't remember the name but my life has never been the same since. The earliest rave that i can "remember" going to is The Wedding event 1992, "Rocky Racoons" wedding. It was at a huge warehouse in Gardena where you had to buy your tickets from lunch truck before going in. There were amusement park rides, moonbounces, lasers, amazing visuals, shredder sound system. It was the first time i saw R.A.W, Barry Weaver, and Fester.

Hey Greg you brought back a lot of great memories of L.A.s infamous rave/house scene. If Plantasia was your first rave than it was a great one. Tef and the rest of the CPU guys knew how to put on quality raves. One of my favorite rave they did was Pyrotechnodiscoworks '96 at the Grand Olympic in downtown. That was just magical. Garth played sick set that night that i will never forget.

I have also been fortunate enough to be a DJ and Promoter in the LA underground scene. I was the other half of the People Who Love You with Sid Ze. Weeble World '96 at the Hollywood Sound stage was one the many infamous parties held threre. Dj Trance and Graeme were amazing. I ended up closing that night it was magical.

We also produced the Opium parties from 94-97. They had some of the best vibes. I think the locations made that possible. The Ranch '94 in Pomona, and the miniature golf course '95 was off the 405 freeway ,Malibu Castle golf park. This was the first and only time it was used for a rave. It no longer is there : ( ......We also had a couple in Pomona Opium '96 at the Glass House with 4 other buildings, and 4 city blocks on their promenade. There were people all over the streets, i couldn't believe it. I had not envisioned it with so many people, and it lasted till the morning. URB magazine dubbed it "rave city' It was amazing.

Many other parties i frequented were family, Techno state, conscious groove, what, insomniac, Narnia, Nectar, Dream, Wicked, and others on Gregs list.

I went to just about all the raves you mentioned. And yes "Communication" '94 i think..... was the best. They had Dubtribe closing the event. They finished off with "I want my planet back" It was sick! People we

I also made many trips to San Diego. My favorites spots to spin were the infamous World Beat Center '95 , 14 and C warehouse '95 , Favorite places to party are those mentioned and also Romper Room, Sunday at the park, and the underworld loft, many others...San Diego was the best during the mid 1990s. I met a lot of great people.

First San Francisco party was Wicked in 1995 ..What can i say,,,Amazing.

Xavier - I'm sure that we've have met at some point. But as I say, that was one of 1000 lives I've lived in this existence. I do want to thank you for being part of some of the greatest parties the LA... no... SoCal Underground scene had seen. I remember the mega-party in the Pamona Promenade and the Opium parties (especially the one at the mini-putt course). Didn't you guys do that one at the airplane hangar in SB? You know the one that eventually inspired the "rave scene" in the movie Go?

        So many good memories.

Wow, we were at a lot of the same parties! Plantasia was my first too. I spent a lot of time that night by the lake...I think Skylab 2000 was playing live out there???

I was at Futurama also. That little event was completely ill. What was it like $5 if I remember correctly? No it must have been more than that...

Dune was incredible (the second one I guess). The freaking comet! Holy shit! That was $5 fo sho.

Technology...worst rave ever in my mind. Trying to cram all those raver kids into the school buses to get down the hill in the morning. Oh lord. We walked up that damn thing. The music kept skipping...like it was supposed to be part of the song but I think freaky Chakra was playing during that time and the sequencer was just freaking out. However, I did meet the girl who would later become my wife that night, so I can't complain too much. How dare they charge for water at that piece, though.

It's exciting to see somebody mention those events! Futurama...hellz heah!

Not sure if it could be considered a rave, don't think the word was coined yet, but it was the big NYE/1984 party in SFCA, in a huge old warehouse complex south of market, crammed with about 5000 people and raided about an hour after we got there. Then there was Mr. Floppy's in Oakland around 1990,...from Friday night straight through till Monday morning...I'm not too proud of who I was back then tho ;)

First rave was back in 1991 when I was 15! I remember a bunch of smaller warehouse parties but the larger ones were paw paw ranch, narnia 1, electric daisy 1,pyrodiscotechno works, grape ape at wild rivers, nocturnal wonderland 1, dune, all the ones out in san bernardino, all the colour parties, mike fix rocks, rocky racoon, boom boom, dina-licous and all those crazy club kids rock. my memories fuzzy but I remember the map points being totally crazy. I lived in oc and would have to drive to LA for the map point then sometimes back to OC or to san bernardino. By the time I got to the parties, it was like 4am. I remember one new years eve party where a bunch of people started overdosing on some bad liguiq G that someone was giving away for free and they shut the party down. Me and my friends got chased by cops and tear gas was thrown at us.. totally uneccesary! Opium was fun - I was actually in fetish fashion show there so if anyone took pictures back then and still have them, can you send it to me?? Oh OZ where everything was green and they gave you 3-D glasses when you came in! Parties back then were so much fun! Now they are just that. big massives where the kids dress up in lingerie. sigh.. best years of my life! ah memories..

Now lets list some oldskool techo songs. Ok Ill start.. dildo dildo, elevator, juicy red apple, tetris, lil fluffy clouds, RTZ dance your ass off.. what else?

I was a big fan of that one and the Gathering. loved those at the concorse sf... ;) also made it to a floppys a few times.... and a few of the large less wicked ghost and dan techno events... :)
