Mine was an underground disco in Germany circa '91...I didn't know it was a 'rave' until I went to my official first one in Oakland('93), which was busted by the cops about an hour after I got there...the party was suppossed to restart somewhere near the water...all the kids showed up in the parking lot, with music blasting from their stereos...neither the sound nor the DJ's showed up, but we all danced until the sun came up over the water...it was beautiful...everyone danced and talked and socialized...talke about PLUR!!!

I don't know the name of the first party I went to, because the first few times I went to parties I wasn't aware they had names. :) Anyways, it was in early 1992, at a no-longer-existing warehouse near the bottom of the Granville Street Bridge, on the downtown side. I was tripped out by the huge blue monster mouth they had set up for you to walk through to get into the party. :)

I went to a small one in an empty Lower Haight retail space
              Christmas Eve 1990...

A toontown or two in '91, trying to see what the buzz was all about, left early...

But I often think of my first one as

a Gathering in the Spring of '92 in a big abandoned warehouse, probably somewhere around China Basin...there was a map point. the map point took you to a parking lot where you boarded the box of a rented moving van that took you to the warehouse...so we couldn't even see where you were going

              That's when I GOT IT.

              (I'm a bit slow)

i think that's the one that impressed me the most, too--my first map point/u-haul truck paty, the same one but we were in different truck trips (i believe). i was with bruce, some of whose relatives had fled nazi germany (and some who had not) and we shared black humor schtick about that in the bumpy, crowded and completely dark ride with its unknown destination....

the first parties i went to that played acid house were called the Ben Wa ball... OC/LA, 1989?

there were all sorts in LA around 1990... Double Hit Mickey, Marcia Brady's Bedroom, Flammable Liquid, Sunday Love, Tef/Davin parties in LA.

The first mindblowingly good party I went to was a Toon Town party in LA, 11/91.

            some of the best:
            toon town, 650 howard, 1991.
the gatherings and sharons at the concourse in sf.
            toon town new years 1992
come-unity parties that went till dawn at 1015 folsom
wicked in the basement of 1015
            carefree/8.0
            all the gathering/vision/basics parties.
            sunsets at point malate
            bulletproof boat parties

but the wicked full moons at bonnie doon were the high points of my life so far...

            ah. now i'm geriatric.

I was so down with Come-Unity at 1015...I tried to tell a young hipster recently that I used to go to 1015, and they teased me...she had no idea that 1015 used to be THE PLACE back in the day...I still have some old $5 off flyers, printed on color stock paper...I knew the door guy, so I never paid, but 1015 was RAD...Tracey's sunrise sets were dope!

Um I think we already had this topic but whatever... my first one was in Sept of 1990, it was just some random where house party in downtown LA, can't remember the name.

I used to love Flammable Liquid, Sunday Love, Truth... those were the good days. I remember toon town too!

It sort of depends on definition. In 94 I accidentally ended up at a party in P-town (cape cod) Had no idea what is was really was. There was just a bunch of people all lovey on each other and comdoms were handed out at the door. I just thought it was a gay party with strange electronic music. My friedn went in and scored some mushrooms.

But growing up south of Boston my friends and I had very little idea what techno was aside from La Busche and Technotronic, It wasn't until I got the hell out of there that I was really introduced to some Trance while living in Boston (Back Bay) with a friend from Holland. Then from there I could never find much until I moved to Colorado in 98. And wow what a different world. Went to a warehouse party and that started phase VIII of my life. It's all been a wild road form there.

                  '93 in Minneapolis

There was hentai on the brick and a huge black man naked on stage spinning orgasmic techno...

Aint nothin like the midwest break ins!

I remember an article on the first page of the Metro section of our paper. This warehouse owner was interviewed about the inexplicable events taking place in the warehouse and industrial districts. He was baffled by a spike in power use from 10pm sat to 6am sun heh! And all the stuff had been moved but nothing stolen! What amazed me is that they could have a wall of sound 8 X 30' there and gone without a trace... like there should have been burn marks :)

At one party the cops showed up, looked around, seemed freaked out, and left! There was a 7 1/2' tall black drag queen in full afro wearing a star spangled hot pant/bra combo, japaneese business men in suits, punks, kids in fast food uniforms (as a point of fasion), goths, bangers, ballers, and just about every other sub culture genre there! Everyone had their own style, their own dance, and their own identity. We meshed and came together through 'house music. When trance was the hardest teckno you'd heard, and Rotterdam would bend your mind "Back the fuck up, cause Romeo's here!"

About a year after that you had to pay big bucks to get a warehouse. Soon after that we moved above ground... like '95. And y'all know what happened to Chicago...

                    MIDWEST!
my first was Zygomatic 2 in 90 or 91 in milwaukee,
which led to a steady vocation and ended in two days of jailtime and the death of the scene for a good 6 months in the midwest norths.
i remember when we all danced in little circles buggin out, instead of ranks and rows facing the dj...
those where good times except for the warehouse grime you'd find in your nose that morning coming down from a good fry!
i agree w/ bridget, it was punks, freaks, burnouts, latino gang bangers(who'd been dancing to house and techno for YEARS.), gays, strays, and what slowly became "ravers".
also if you where too young for bars it was your club for the night.

Yer right, those were the days. Raves for me have never been the same since. How about "Mr. Happy" at the Park Plaza?

    it was for my birthday.

there was a chill room upstairs

    i was in heaven.

let me just point out that the troc was the sh*t... still my all-time fav. venue.

this was probably in '93 or '94

Funny aside about the Trocadero around the same time...my freinds and I went to a party there, had a fab time, and decided to go again. we had been missinformed, told it was a weekly...when we went back the next week, E'd out, and me in my ponytails and fuzzy sweater, we were shocked to walk into bondage-a-go-go...quite a differant experience on E, lemme tell you! and boy, did my friends and I stick out...but we still just went with the flow and had a good time...

I remember just walking around in awe...I had never been to anything like that before...I was in the bathroom, trying really hard not to stare at the really big she-male applying lipstick in the bathroom, and some girl wearing a t-shirt that said "Pussy" across the boobs grabbed my ass while in line for the stalls...I knew that random hugging probably meant something entirely differant to this crowd...
      • Re: What and When was your first "Rave"?

        Tue, May 25, 2004 - 10:30 PM
my very first rave was early 94, i believe, a party on shotwell or capp street where drc was spinning -- but i didn't know it was a rave, thought it was just a party with too many damned people and not enough ventilation.

a few weeks later, someone told me that if i liked the music at wicked and comeunity, i should check out two parties that saturday. one was a friends and family at klub komotion, where i went, paid my two bucks or whatever, and felt like there was no room to dance and people weren't very friendly (ironic in retrospect) -- so i went to party suggestion #2, which was at the trocadero.

i danced my ass off all night long, and on leaving, met this weird guy on the street with his hair hacked off funny and odd handmade clothes with shorts layered over long pants... he introduced himself and turns out he owned ameba on haight, the old-school tiny raver central store, alan ameba (one of the coolest guys on the planet). he later told me that party at trocadero was the first stompy.

leslie, i love your recounting of those parties that we (and i bet others here) attended but you got your guys mixed up: mark was the ameba owner (and former boyfriend of a woman who's become a great dj) who eventually moved to santa rosa and kept his hand in rave things; it was alan who was dressed like you describe him and worked there; he moved here to santa cruz and moved on in other ways. both great classic guys! and how can we forget the equally 'family' hangout store hosewares down the street and the folks there! now, both history, but beautiful history, as are those great afternoon bar-b-cue parties in the big lot behind ameba lined with san pedros!

            Thu, May 27, 2004 - 11:35 PM
thanks, will, but i don't have anybody mixed up. it's believe that mark and alan were partners, and alan was there after mark left (and opened a tiny record store in santa rosa), but after the big amoeba records opened on haight in the old bowling alley, alan closed his store and moved back to santa cruz.

it was alan who i met on the street that night, wearing his custom clothing line that they sold in the store... and who used to be the phone info line for the rave scene, he actually would read what' going on off on from a printout from the sfraves calendar that he kept on the counter. it was alan who suggested i sub to that list... and my life was never the same.

i never got to know mark very well, though we spotted him on the dancefloor a couple of weeks ago at the late night sneaky and meat katie show at mezzanine.

and i have to say that mark's ex-girlfriend was a great dj then, too. nice to see djs really hang in there for so many years and still stay fresh.

oops, i meant "i belive that mark and alan were partners" -- too much editing, not enough proofreading ;^)

btw, forgot to mention that mark ameba's hat was one of the most consistent symbols of the scene to me during those years... that cool heavy wool felt thing looked like a birds nest, so distinctive. as a hat person, i did admire that about him.

            the bbqs! that's so rad...

ameba was so awesome... they were the ultimate ground zero for the small rave scene back in the day. remember all the mix tapes under the counter? before cds...

i remember seeing the first 2 mix cds there (jeno and spun)... i thought, "naaaaah, these will never replace the underground mixtape!"

i would always buy one tape and load up on flyers when i went in. oh yeah, they also carried anarchic adjustment clothing...

it was such a close and dynamic community then. everyone was so accessible.

housewares was really cool too but it lacked something that ameba had. i loved all those flyers on the wall.

i have a gigantic box in my garage with all my flyers.

i think it was 91 at the casa in downtown LA. scince then my life has never been the same. after that night i was hooked. i needed to hear that music that moved me so. see those incredible happy people and take those deliciouse mind altering substances.

from there i started hitting flamable liquid, all family and fresh produce parties. insomniac, citrisonic, no doz, does your mama know, and for those who know and where there, the infamouse partys countdown and communication. those two nights will always live in infamy as far as i'm concerned.

Not my first, but my best...

I loved the YOUR SISTER'S HOUSE parties in San Francisco. They were small, and held at a different place every week, in 1993 and perhaps continued into 94. All the djs were women; the parties were thrown by a collective of female djs, of the same name as the party. Sometimes SISTER'S preceded their parties with educational events, discussions, etc.

Around the same time TAZ (now SPAZ) was throwing great (also relatively small) parties at their space on the 6th floor of an old office building on Market Street. YOUR SISTER'S HOUSE used that location for some of their parties, and on at least a few occasions, TAZ and SISTER's doubled-up, when a SISTER'S party over the course of the evening transformed into a TAZ party.

At that time the TAZ and YOUR SISTER'S HOUSE parties were just a few hundred people at most (never over, say 250?). There was plenty of room on the dance floor.

The vibe at these events, in the Summer and Fall of 1993, was amazing indeed.

My oh my...how things have come along.

I remember my first party in '91, at an after hours place in Boston, called The Loft. Right behind Boston City Police Headquarters. Nuts. Armand Van Helden (used to be just Armand) was playing house downstairs, but he was just an opener at that point, and people would clown him for his yellow fur Kangol, yellow Puma suit, fake shelltoes, ski-goggles, and the FAKEST link you've ever seen; just rediculous, and taking himself WAYYY too seriously, but it was all fun and innocent then. Many's the twisted night spent there, and hooking up with the flyers for the big parties.

Well...SPAZ is still doin it. I didn't catch onto their stuff until '96, but it's still goin on.

        O
