I'd like to know what some of you think happened to stop the rave momentum.
Was it police crackdowns on raves, too much irresponsible drug use, too much
commercial influence or a combination of things. As a psychologist I try to find out why people are drawn to
raves and equally why many are dissatisfied after a time. Many I have met simply feel that they
have grown out of it, that it was a youthful social experiment to be discarded after a certain age.
Others see it as a life-altering experience that leads them to further explore alternate ways of living.
Is this group an argument against the idea that raving is an age- based experience?
Do you encounter much resistance from younger people, do they see you as intruding upon
their clique or do you feel welcomed into the general rave community, ( whatever there is of one.)
I am curious about why some of you are still interested in raves, even though raving seems
to be somewhat different than it was.

I've had the link to this article in my Inbox for more almost 2 weeks and just got around to checking it out. I think it's something well worth reading by everyone - here and elsewhere.
--------------------

Older People Are Happy: Life Begins At 40 And 50 And 60

ScienceDaily (Feb. 18, 2008) — Growing old is a happier experience than many of us imagine - that’s according to the findings of a study conducted at Queen’s University, Belfast, on behalf of the Changing Ageing Partnership (CAP).

The study, which was conducted by Dr John Garry from Queen’s University, looked at young people’s attitudes to happiness in old age and how these attitudes affect their current health-related behaviour.

Dr Garry said: “We have all heard the saying ‘life begins at forty’. But it seems that many people, particularly young people, actually associate growing old with being miserable, meaning they don’t see any benefit in preserving their health for old age.

“Young people like to enjoy themselves, but this often means behaving in ways that can damage their future health. The harmful effects of alcohol, smoking and poor diet and fitness are well known, but many young people still binge-drink, smoke, avoid eating fruit and vegetables and fail to do regular exercise.

“This study aimed to find out whether this risky behaviour is associated with young people’s estimates of happiness in old age. Are they determined to ‘live it up’ while they are young because they are convinced that as they grow older they will become more and more miserable?

“The research found that, contrary to common belief, old age does not mean a decline in happiness - older people are just as happy as younger people. Whilst many young people associate old age with doom and gloom, this is not the case.

“We also found a strong link between the belief that happiness declines with age and levels of binge drinking by young men. It seems that these young men abuse their bodies through alcohol because, as they see it, there is little point in preserving their health for a miserable old age.

“Perhaps health professionals should consider this in their efforts to tackle binge drinking amongst young men. By addressing their incorrect perception that growing old is a miserable experience, they may be encouraged to drink more responsibly and take better care of their health.”

Archie and Margaret Lindsay, who are celebrating their 44th Valentine’s Day together, say they are perfectly happy in their old age. The couple attend the Newtownabbey Senior Citizens’ Forum. Mr Lindsay said: “I am surprised that so many young people think that getting older means being unhappy. My wife and I are both in our seventies and are as happy now as we were thirty years ago - and I think many of our friends would say the same. In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years!

“It’s important that young people realise that they can still enjoy life as they get older. As long as they make an effort to look after themselves, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t look forward to a happy and fulfilled old age.”
The Index of all entries - http://morelife.org/personal/kittyreflects/ has this newest at the top.

I haven't yet, but will edit the above item by Paul to include a "revealing" photo I took last July - http://morelife.org/personal/photos2007/paulnud070814163324_2_600x839.jpg
I didn't think about including it when he first wrote the item, but I think it adds some information for readers beyond the links there. Personally, I think he looks better now than when I first met him in 2000 and when I took a similar photo in summer 2001, last one shown on the Photo page - http://morelife.org/personal/photos/photos_5.html

I and husband Paul are old-time ravers in a limited sense - we've been high energy dancing for years, but only at raves (in Arizona) for the past year. However, we're both in our 60s - he'll be turning 70 next February - and we both have no intention of stopping. We find the parties/events/raves much more friendly than most of the clubs, including those we danced at regularly for several years in Toronto till we moved our Canadian residence to south of Algonquin Provincial Park (Paul's legally a Canadian and I'm technically a USer - mixed marriage per government view).

Problem with being in rural Ontario for the warm months is the absolute lack of any dancing events - at least that I've been able to discover so far less than 3 hours travel. With the Canadian federal and Ontario provincial governments having done their best to prevent any raves from taking place, there don't appear to be many at all. The only thing I find is a massive 3 day WEMF somewhere in Ontario (no venue given yet for 7/20-22 event). An article written last December at exclaim.ca (http://www.exclaim.ca/articles/multiarticlesub.aspx?csid1=106&csid2=864&fid1=24430 ) suggests that there are smaller events/parties being held underground. Personally we're not insistent on the enormous multi-stage events that draw thousands and cost $25 and more per person. We just want good trance/techno/energy house for dancing - talented local DJs are fine with us.

Since members here have "been around" awhile and likely have connections lots of places, I figured this is a good place to ask for information. So if anyone can steer me to a group/tribe that includes parties/events/raves in the southern Ontario area I'd sure appreciate it. And I and Paul look forward to our return to central Arizona in late October for some great dance events.

Thanks in advance.
Here's a new mix some of you might enjoy. It'll certainly bring back memories for many. It's an impromptu mix of old-ish, trippy, breaky tracks sprinkled with bits of four-on-the-floor, recorded totally and spontaneously live. It's unedited, except for my having to cut/fade out the last track because the turntables got bumped in the mix following it. But, things were going pretty swimmingly for an hour there...

Come to find out, he is an old-school raver who, up until very recently, was still involved in the scene (djing and promoting). We talked about old parties we were both at and had a great time reminiscing. Although he knew the wherabouts of a number of djs, he had lost touch with quite a few. It got me thinking.

It is a fact that the 90's "Rave" scene in the Bay Area was a very special time. Has there been any work to archive this in written format? I would love to read a historical document on this. How the scene evolved... who were the influencers... the djs... the drugs... all of it. What did Jonah Sharp do for the scene? Why do I see ETI everywhere? Silent Records, and Reflective. England in the US. Chill rooms. Flyer art. All of it.

Does anyone know if this is happening? I have a handful of books that deal with the "rave" culture, but nothing definitive. Nothing that attempts to really document this time. What happened to all these people? Where are they now?
Robert Tait in Tehran
Monday August 6, 2007
The Guardian

Iran's drive to enforce Islamic morals netted revellers from Britain and Sweden after police swooped on a "satanic" concert organised over the internet.

Police arrested 230 people and seized drugs, alcohol and 800 illicit CDs after raiding the event in Karaj, 12 miles west of Tehran. Those arrested included young women in skimpy and "inappropriate" clothing, officers said.

Reza Zarei, Tehran's provincial police chief, said the operation also resulted in the confiscation of 20 video cameras, with which organisers allegedly planned to shoot "obscene" films and then blackmail female participants.

The event included rock and rap performers as well as female singers, who are banned under Iran's Islamic laws. The authorities described the artistes as "satanist" without elaborating. Iran's rulers routinely label much of western-style popular music and culture as decadent.

Preparations were kept so secret that revellers were made aware of the venue only hours before the rave.

Although security guards were hired to act as lookouts and plans were made to clear the site of alcohol and drugs the police found 150 bottles of alcohol and drugs, including marijuana.

Most of the detainees came from rich families and included people from Iranian backgrounds who had travelled from Britain and Sweden, Mr Zarei said. "This is the first time that tens of male and female participants have been invited to such an event through an internet call," he told the semi-official ISNA news agency. Rock concerts are rarely permitted in Iran but are sometimes held illegally in venues such as underground car parks.

Last Wednesday's raid occurred during a government-backed "social security" campaign in which police have arrested or cautioned thousands of women whose dress or headscarves have been deemed insufficiently Islamic. While such offensives occur periodically, this year's has been carried out with unusual intensity over a prolonged period amid accusations that the US is trying to topple the Islamic regime through a "soft revolution".

Authorities last month doubled the number of officers deployed on morals patrols. Police have been instructed to arrest young men with "western" hairstyles. Those arrested are released only after giving the names of their barbers and making signed commitments to get hair-cuts. They then have to return to the police station to show their new hairstyles.

So we all remember how it was.

We all remember raves in the nineties, and how there were gays everywhere.

We all remember the fairy wings, the wigs, the glitter... then later the candy kids, the stuffed animal backpacks.

These guys were gay. Not just homosexual, but EXTREMELY FUCKING GAY. There were some lesbos too... but everybody remembers the herds of flaming gay males... how could you forget them?

Well apparently they've left the building. Apparently what is left of the rave scene no longer even has any homos. Okay, maybe that is an exagerration to some extent... but I posted on the message board I used to go on when I lived in Seattle, simply asking;

'Are there any gay people left on this board of 16,000 people?'

And not only did I not get any responses from gay people, many of the straight people who ARE there decided that things were ALWAYS LIKE THIS. They said to me things like

'Well maybe they don't go around projecting their sexuality all the time like you do?'

Ha!..... hahahahaha!!!

Yeah right! Any of us who were into the rave scene in the nineties will let you know that the gays made themselves known. I might not believe in accusing people of 'projecting their sexualities,' but there was never a doubt FOR A SECOND that these guys were gay.

Not only that, but they would post about it on message-boards and mailing lists all the time. They'd be like

'Gay party kid meet-up right before Sandra Collins set in the trance room!'

So okay. I might be preaching to the choir, but I want some more stories... can somebody give me some stories of the extreme gayness that was once the rave scene... so I can go back and post them as evidence for the boring kids of today?

For me, it was the rave camp at Burning Man 1996. Gateway, Wicked, and CCC each set up awesome sound systems. Gateway's camp had all these Intellibeams focused outward from a radial sculpture that appeared from the distance as though it were an alien landing zone. Wicked, in contrast, set up a more enclosed dance space topped with a translucent pyramid. And CCC had a minimal set-up with no shelter at all, which made for a most surreal experience at night, especially when the winds had died down.

The really weird bit was the chill tent in the middle that was playing awful rock 'n roll music. Many folks passed by, but it each time I did, no one was hanging out there!

It was at Gateway when I discovered the magic of Freaky Chakra's music -- a most transendental experience indeed.

Of the several events the last couples months, two of the parties of pretty much the same size and advertising had pretty much the same DJ's and genre. They were held in different areas of the city.

One had a high percentage of freindly, down to earth people. Lots of smiles and no sense of competition. Just people having a good time. The other had more of the pretentious crowd. Cutting in line at the bar, poiting at the older lady on the dancefloor and laughing, just general a-holeness and "look at me" attitude rampant.

Thought it was coincidence but went to a few other parties in the respective areas of town. Same thing.

Anyone else experience this? Wonder if it's actually the area of town or the crowd that the different promoters bring.

*If anyone is bored enough to respond to this, let's try to leave specific event names out so it doesn't turn into some us vs them thing :)
BUZZLIFE SAYS GOODBYE TO NATION NIGHTCLUB

WASHINGTON, DC - On July 16th 2006, after a decade
of Buzzlife events, Nation Nightclub will close
its doors. The building will soon make way for
development as the southeast waterfront is
restructured in preparation for the recently
approved baseball stadium.

While we are saddened to see our home of so many
years close, this is a very exciting time for
Buzzlife. Our time in DC is no where near its end
and we have exciting things planned for 2006 and
beyond, remarks Scott Henry, president of
Buzzlife Productions.

Nation was originally named The Capitol Ballroom
and opened its doors in 1996 under the management
of Cellar Door Productions. Buzzlife began
throwing the flagship event Buzz in October of
the same year. In 1998, ownership transferred to
John Boyle and the then warehouse venue was
transformed into a multi-level superclub that
would soon host every major electronic act in the
world. In 2003, Buzz revamped its musical style
and reopened as Cubik.

Buzzlife and Nation have won awards from major
industry publications across the world. Nation was
awarded the title of Best US Superclub and
Buzzlife, Best Event Promoter. This made Buzz
and Nation a destination for the top DJs in the
industry and a milestone for up and coming
Washington DC area DJs. Over the years, every 'Top
100 DJ' as named by BPM Magazine, the leading
electronic music publication in the US, has
performed at a Buzzlife Event at Nation.
other award-winning weeklies. Saturdays play host
to Velvetnation, a gay dance event, created and
operated by John Guggenmos and Ed Bailey. Thursday
nights have been home to Alchemy, one of the
darker realm of club land and features goth and
industrial music.
I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plentyof music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music. George Eliot (1819 - 1880)

like downtempo join our tribe http://tribes.tribe.net/ambientmafia

The Ambient Mafia is a San Francisco-based DJ collective that specializes in downtempo, or chill music.

Back in 1999, a group of chill DJs decided to band together to represent the side of DJ culture that was more interested in creating a cool atmosphere than in what the Future Sound of London best described as the “indiscreet blowjob” side of the DJ scene. Not that we don’t love getting indiscreet blowjobs. We do. Especially our girls.

Anyway, the Mafia quickly made a name for itself on the then-thriving massive scene. Promoters soon learned the value of having a skilled downtempo crew in their chill rooms, as opposed to their wannabe DJ friends trainwrecking their way thru a crate of trance b-sides.

With a few exceptions, the days of the massive are over, but the Ambient Mafia continues to be a visible presence on the local scene through residencies and appearances at venues like Anu, 111 Minna, Space 550 and various underground venues.

Times change, but the Mafia mission remains the same – to give people music that makes them think and dance and … chill.
With his brothers Scott Hardkiss and Gavin Hardkiss, Robbie Hardkiss is a central figure in the infamous Hardkiss family of DJs and musicians. Working in their hometown of San Francisco, the Hardkiss brothers were instrumental in developing the U.S. rave and outdoor party scene in the early '90s. Pioneering Hardkiss tunes such as "3 Nudes In A Purple Garden" and "Rainery" helped define the psychedelic West Coast breakbeat sound that continues to grow today. Their legendary status within the realm of electronic music was immortalized with the release of their double album, Delusions of Grandeur.

Since then, Robbie Hardkiss has gone on to remix songs (with and without his brothers) for artists such as Elton John, Freestylers, Spacetime Continuum, The Grid, Lords of Acid, The Sandals, Q-Burn, God Within (aka Scott Hardkiss), and Hawke.

Scott, Gavin and Robbie, the Hardkiss brothers, ruled the underground San Francisco club scene during the 1990s with a mixture of acid, trance and breakbeat techno. World-class DJs all, the brothers also run their own Hardkiss label, releasing material as themselves plus myriad other artists, including Rabbit in the Moon and Scott's God Within project. It was Scott and Gavin who formed the group in the early '90s after experiencing Britain's 1989 Summer of Love firsthand while studying in Europe. Returning to the States, the two began promoting and organizing massive raves on the East Coast, but later moved out to San Francisco to share the vibe with the West as well. Hooking up with old friend Robbie and christening themselves Hardkiss, the trio began recording material for their eponymous label. Though few releases appeared on anything other than vinyl, the label compilation Delusions of Grandeur serves as a good primer to the Hardkiss sound. Scott, Robbie and Gavin have each released compilations detailing their mixing skills as well. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

The ancient festival of Beltaine marks the transition from winter to summer, from darkness to light. This sacred night was a time of magic and celebration, where the veil between the physical and the spirit world was at its thinnest. This year, we pay special recognition to Cybele, a manifestation of Earth Mother worshiped since Neolithic times by drinking, drumming, and dancing until dawn.
Today, we have traded bonfires for blacklights and tribal drums for drum machines, creating new rituals to show our appreciation for the cycles of nature. Put on your craziest costume, come join us for a modern Beltaine celebration, and dance your way into summer.
> Monday, March 13th, 2006 <
Last year, on May 23rd, Secret Psychedelica was broken. We were scheduled to have Hujaboy come in to help celebrate our 4 year anniversary. Unfortunately, there were a handful of events that took place and Hujaboy was not able to make it (until our Halloween show). With the help of Aaron Jae, we re-organized the anniversary party which featured Breakbeat Scientist, Reid Speed. This gave birth to Secret Breakedelica. The night was an overwhelming success and we've been looking for a reason to do more. In fact, we almost started it back up at the Buddha Lounge in Mountain View but in the end, we felt it would be better to have the night in a familiar spot. It wasn't until the end of January that there was talk about changing Secret Psychedelica two twice a month at the Savoy. So, here we are now, instead of two Secret Psychedelica nights, we've got something new...the bastard child of Secret Psychedelica. The main musical focus on this night will be breaks of all sorts and your usual psychedelic suspects will be in the "backroom" playing 80s/90s electronica.

(ok, i confess there is one other scenario that i'd accept as the way to go, but it's not as public a thought ;^)

lots of folks come and go in the rave scene, because for some, it's a phase and they grow out of the whole idea of music and dancing as a way of life. i figure people who are members of this tribe, though, see themselves in a different way. certainly it is for me, and my commitment to the great things that come from dancing with your eyes closed, alongside likeminded people, has only grown over the years.

so here's my question: how do you see yourself involved in the rave/electronic music/dance culture in your life... say in 10, 20 or 30 years? will it always be part of your life, or do you think you'll move into other things?

Rats at a Rave

By Amy Coombs
ScienceNOW Daily News
16 February 2006
Cranking up the music can exacerbate the club drug ecstasy's deleterious
effects on the brain, according to a new study. When scientists simulated a
dance party for rats in the lab, the rodents suffered from reduced brain
activity 5 times longer than their counterparts who took the drug in peace
and quiet. The findings suggest environment may play a significant role in
the harmful effects of the drug among humans.

Otherwise known as ecstasy, 3, 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), is
commonly used as a recreational drug in the dance hall scene. Users report
an amplification of sensory experiences and heightened pleasure. After
multiple uses, however, ecstasy can damage cells that release serotonin, a
neurotransmitter associated with memory. Increased body temperature and
muscular activity--both likely results of a night on the dance
floor--potentially increase the drug's toxicity. Yet little research has
addressed the effect of one of the most common environmental factors
associated with ecstasy use: loud music.

To see how sound impacts the effects of ecstasy, Michelangelo Iannone, a
neurologist at the Institute of Neurological Science in Catanzaro, Italy,
and colleagues gave relatively low and high doses of the drug to 20 rats.
The team then placed half of the rodents in a cage blasted with white noise
and half in a sound-proof metal box, while monitoring their brain activity
with a device called an electrocorticograph (ECoG).

Turning the volume up appears to turn brain function down. Among rats given
the high dose of ecstasy, those exposed to 95 decibels--the maximum noise
legally allowed in Italian nightclubs--had ECoG readings half as high as
rats not exposed to sound. Brain activity for rats left to trip quietly
returned to normal after 1 day, but raving rats' brain activity stayed low
for 5 days. Rats given low doses of ecstasy also had low ECoG readings after
sound exposure, but their readings returned to normal after just 1 day.
Those given saline instead of ecstasy experienced no drop in ECoG reading,
the team reports online today in BMC Neuroscience.

The results indicate that relatively common environmental factors can have
big impacts on the harmful effects of high-dose drug use, says John
Mendelson, a physician and clinical scientist at California Pacific Medical
Center's Addiction Pharmacology Research Laboratory in San Francisco. Yet,
he notes that the rats were given higher doses of ecstasy than would be seen
in humans, so the results may not translate directly to people. And Linda
Cottler, an epidemiologist at the Washington University School of Medicine
in St. Louis, Missouri, points out that ecstasy users often use the drug in
venues other than raves, and therefore background noise is probably not as
detrimental as on-going abuse.

I was scanning through the "Graeme SF" thread and saw that Leslie had mentioned attending one of these events (thrown by myself and 4 others). While I'm fortunate enough to have most of the music recorded, our photographic record of the early days is woefully inadequate. It dawned on me that there MAY be some nostalgia-inducing photos out there within the near-500 members of this tribe. It's a total long shot, but worth asking.

to the best of my memory, here are the dates and venues and any other relevant info that could jar your memories

Lepidoptera - 12.6.96 - Third Wave Dance Studio, 24th and Mission, SF. DJs included Greg Sandler and Shilo Maggi. One might remember me proposing to my then-girlfriend via a 30'-long blacklight poster that was unveiled around 3am, followed by much screaming and a 150 person group hug.

Superlove - 4.13.97 - Cyborganic, SF. Among the first parties thrown here. Anyone walking into the space went through a tunnel lined with shiny silver emergency blankets with strobe lights at either end and a fog machine doing what fog machines do. First floor was a more downtempo affair, with Boomerang Fidget and Maiz (a k a Bonnie) doing their thing, with an early breaks set by Uncle Noah. Downstairs DJs included Ethan, Cloud, James (a k a Slayer), and Tom from Koinonea.

Lepidoptera - 8.?.97 - 112? Minna, SF. This was one large UPSTAIRS room. Low ceilings. Hell-like temperatures. Regrettably poor sound (from using the owner's "trusted sound guy"). Despite this, a surprisingly strong vibe. DJs included Andy W, Tom L-G, and Greg Sandler.

[Lepidoptera 1 Year Anniversary - tiny little spot above The Caravan bar on Park. We actually had plenty of pictures of this one. Trent, Andy W, Yeti played.]

Synaesthesia - 5.23.98 - a tiny Oakland warehouse next to the BART tracks near the Fruitvale exit. This was a collaboration between Lepidoptera and Math Sound Workshop (DJ Pistachio, Anonymous). The spot was long and narrow, with a very high ceiling, and a chillspace on a mezzanine. Walls were lined with black plastic and then decorated with all kinds of handcrafted banners and artwork. DJs that night included the two I just mentioned as well as Droid, Yeti, and a killer set by Li Sasaki.

If anyone happens to have any photos taken at these early parties, PLEASE send me a private message. I'd like to arrange to borrow, scan, and return them. I assure you I'd treat them nicely, and find some way to compensate you for your troubles.

40. We're unsure about the kind of image we are
projecting and whether or not we are correct as
we try to transition our former rave fashions to
something that looks hip not "busted hip" as we
get older. The following combinations do NOT go
together and should be avoided;
1) A nose ring and bifocals
this event had a whole bunch of us oldtimers there, some of whom i hadn't seen in years. better still, it was filled with fresh new blood too... all dancing our asses off.

and it felt like the old days. people smiling and talking to each other, a coming together of all sorts and types -- i must have had 15 people tell me they liked my wing tattoo or my hair or just to say something happy and friendly, and i made one new friend who i think i'll know for a long time. the vibe was totally the same as it was 10-12 years ago. there were moments that i flashed back to another party in a similar space, and i felt soooo peaceful knowing that we are still here, and new people are still coming, and that what we do and what we have created is holding up over time, because it is good for our spirit, our soul, our body and who we are.

thanks to all of you who, like me, refuse to give up what we love so much, and make it available to the future generations.
